Before The Ambulance Arrives

After you have called 911, there are several things you can do until Emergency Responders arrive.  These simple procedures will greatly aid the Emergency Responders and the patient they will treat.

  1. If you determine that the patient is pulseless and non-breathing, begin cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), but only if you have been trained in this life saving technique.
  2. Stay calm; do not get excited.  This will reassure the patient that help is on the way.
  3. Make the patient as comfortable as possible.
  4. Gather all the medication that the patient may be taking.  This will help Emergency Responders better determine the medical history of the patient.
  5. Move all furniture or obstacles out of the way so Emergency Responders have easy access to the patient. Make sure all pets are secure in another part of the house.
  6. Remember the time, this is very important.  When was the last time you talked to the patient?  How long has this medical condition existed?  How long has the person been unconscious?

LFPD Fire Extinguisher Training Program

The purpose of our fire extinguisher training is to familiarize your employees with basic fire extinguisher operation.

The class is taught at your facility by a fire department speaker.  We teach fire extinguisher use for life safety purposes only.  Two classes are offered.

Classroom only:

Employees will learn what elements make up a fire, the classifications of fire and which fire extinguisher should be used for each classification.  They will be shown how to use a fire extinguisher and given guidance for making the decision to use an extinguisher on a fire.  Other workplace safety issues such as emergency exits pull station and alarm activation locations will be discussed.  Emphasis will be placed on discussing the fire safety features of your particular facility.  Depending on class size and employee interest during question and answer time, the actual training time runs 30-45 minutes.

Classroom with hands-on:

This class covers all of the elements for classroom only plus...

The hands-on demonstration portion should take place on a level surface in an open area.  The speaker will provide the barrel and fuel for creating the fires.  You are responsible for renting the fire extinguishers for the employees to use.

Please note:

The speaker reserves the right to cancel the outside demonstration portion of the training due to inclement weather or if an appropriate site is not available.  Every effort will be made to communicate a cancellation as soon as possible.  The classroom portion can still occur without the hands-on training if you so choose.

If you would like to schedule either class please call 4-6 weeks ahead of your preferred date.  Contact the Lemont Bureau of Fire Prevention at (630)257-0191.  Instructor Fees are $100 per class for businesses - $50 per class for non-profit agencies.

Both of the above trainings are intended for life safety familiarization only.  Most companies make it part of their annual safety training.  Some send only their floor marshals or safety committee members.  It is not intended to give fire brigade members formal fire suppression training.  For more information contact us at (630)257-0191.

We offer classes on topics such as blood-borne pathogen training, Emergency Planning and other Fire and Life Safety Topics.  For information contact the Public Education Department at (630)257-0191.
For CPR for businesses - contact our EMS Department at (630) 257-2376 ext. 239.
Thanks for looking and have a safe day!
