Our Position: Simple
measures will save lives in Lemont.
While the "push" for fire prevention and
fire safety normally comes as part of National Fire Prevention Week, it is a topic that should remain at the top of the list
for Lemont residents 365 days a year. That fact was driven home - and
painfully so – recently when the United States Fire Administration reported, an estimated 2,500 children age 14 or younger
were injured or killed in residential fires last year. Of these fire casualties, almost half were under the age of five and
70 percent were under the age of 10. The report, Residential Fires and Child
Casualties, was developed by the National
Fire Data Center,
part of FEMA's U.S. Fire Administration.
The bottom line - and it was a very grim bottom
line - was the fact that in the United States the number of children who died in a house fire in 2005 was the highest in six
years.
Efforts to raise community awareness about fire dangers and educate the public on how to prevent fires and
how to react once they occur are the most cost effective part of any fire protection program.
There is no doubt that good public education programs can reduce fires, deaths, injuries, and monetary loss.

Keep Your Home and Family Safe From Harmful Substances! Nationally,
about 100,000 children will be poisoned accidentally this year, and most of these poisonings will occur as a direct result
of adult carelessness about poisonous household substances. For your information, here are a few Poison Prevention Tips. Also see Your Safety: Poisons and Harmful Substances.
